Damian Lillard could destroy The Era of the Super Teams
I know this is a late post, but let me just say this.
I want to give the Western Conference title to the Portland
Trail Blazers. It just dawned on me that a successful Portland season could
mean the end of the Era of the Super Teams. As of this writing, the Los Angeles
Clippers are giving the Golden State Warriors hell. Giannis Antetokounmpo is
Milwaukee’s top star but I doubt his allegiance with Khris Middleton and Eric
Bledsoe could rival the starpower of that of Lebron James, Chris Bosh, and
Dwyane Wade. In some ways, I cannot even consider Chris Paul an equal to James
Harden at Houston. Sure, Paul is a superstar playing for a ridiculous amount of
dough, but clearly, Harden is at a different level.
I cannot even say that the Boston Celtics have an
established big three.
Damian Lillard is finding success against all odds with his
teammates acknowledging him as leader. One can argue that his approach could be
equated to that of the 80s – with little-known team leaders like George Gervin,
Alex English, Sidney Moncrief, Rolando Blackman, Mark Price, Jeff Malone, and Jack
Sikma, among others leading the way for their respective squads. These players
are all-stars in their own right but they could have had championships if they
moved to other teams during their prime. Instead, they worked on their
individual numbers – which isn’t a bad thing if you think about it since they
had to work their asses off to merely compete with other teams.
Lillard is on the path of being a good player in a playoff first
round team… but is also on the verge of zooming to legendary status if he leads
his team to victory.
